When you picture a wine trip, your mind probably jumps to the hills of Tuscany, the châteaux of Bordeaux, or a qvevri cellar in Georgia. But it turns out you can walk through a vineyard and meet a real winemaker without buying a plane ticket at all – just get in the car and drive across Lithuania. The country is already home to 19 licensed wineries, meaderies, and cideries, and cold-climate wine is becoming an increasingly recognized name in Europe's drinks world.
When the Vineyard Starts in Western Lithuania – Samogitia (Žemaitija)
Cold-climate wine is a new, fast-growing global trend. Canada, the American Midwest, Sweden, Denmark, and Lithuania – countries where harsh winters and short summers give wine a completely different character than it has in southern Europe. The result is fresh, light, lower-alcohol drinks made from little-known grape varieties, and sometimes even from rowan berries, blueberries, or honey. For anyone tired of the usual Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, this is an entirely new world of flavor – one that can be discovered close to home.

From Klaipėda to Anykščiai, from Biržai to Alytus – the country's wineries are scattered across all of Lithuania, each with its own story. Some, like Memel Wine (Prūsijos vynas), sit by the seaside; others are tucked among the lakes of Aukštaitija (Roksala, Gintaro Sino) or the fields of Sūduva (Kidulių vynas, Devynbitė). Many offer not just tastings but tours of the production process, and at some you can even spend the night right next to the vineyard. That means a weekend trip around Lithuania can easily become a real wine road – with several stops, different producers, and a completely new way of looking at a country you thought you already knew.
What Awaits in the Glass
Lithuanian wine is a chance to discover the craftsmanship of local winemakers and to feel how our winemaking differs from the famous regions of southern Europe. Production here is genuinely varied: grape wine, fruit wine, berry wine, mead, cider, and traditional tinctures (trauktinės). For some, it's a chance to find familiar, traditional fruit and berry flavors; for others, it's the first taste of a drink made from grapes grown in our own climate. Either way, the point of a tasting is the same: to see for yourself how interesting and how good Lithuanian wine can be, once you give it a chance.
How to Try It
If you'd rather experience it than just read about it, tastings can be arranged with a theme tailored to you – anything from an intimate evening to a larger event. Indicative pricing: up to 15 people from €950, up to 30 people from €1330, up to 45 people from €1815. The price includes five different Lithuanian drinks (wine, mead), room and glassware rental, and the work of an expert host – all you need to bring is curiosity.

From most of Europe, Lithuania is just a short, easy hop away – no border checks within the Schengen area, and once you land, everything is within reach of a single rental car.
